Why does the library sometimes have big book sales?
This answer also applies to DVDs, CDs, maps, Local Studies and other library materials
Answer
Why does the library have book sales?
Nottingham City Libraries occasionally holds book sales so we can remove:
- duplicate copies and items that are not popular anymore
- books that are out of date / have a new edition,
- stock that is in a poor state of repair for on-going lending.
This applies to all stock, including local studies materials and other specialist items such as music scores, maps etc.
By 'weeding out' the old stock we also make room for new items and can therefore offer the best selection for our library users.
It also means that the items withdrawn can be offered for sale to the citizens of Nottingham at significantly reduced prices. Any items left over from a sale are then either; sent to specialist book dealers (who can either buy the stock from us or sell it on the council’s behalf) or offered to other institutions and charities as a donation.
Any money raised from the sale of our withdrawn stock is re-invested in the library service.
